Sophora secundiflora
Texas Mt. Laurel is a small to medium-sized evergreen understory tree native mainly to central, south, & west Texas. It has a distinct bright, lime-green glossy compound leaves. Typically multi-trunked it can be grown as a small tree or a large shrub. They are slow-growing. It produces purple flowers in the spring that look like wisteria. The blooms produce an intoxicating sweet to spicy, grape bubblegum fragrance. Thick, tan seed pods follow flowers and hang on plants well into winter. Pods contain bright red, hard seeds that happen to be poisonous. (Note: the next years flowering wood is formed early, during late summer the prior season, at the ends of the branches. If these are pruned off, the trees will not produce blooms the following spring.)
